    Flash is growing...

seems like Flash is really growing - it's now on MSN, AOL, and Overture home pages. Who would have thought it

    What's next Flash on Zeldman.com!

    hey... don't say that...

flash isn't for everyone... we all have our forte... the things we really rock out

I will admit... flash is not my favorite thing to work with and action script gives me a headache but I can layout & build a gorgeous site in various languages... and I can make some stunning graphics (if I do say so myself)

I make it a point to play with flash and I feel much more comfertable with it then I did with my first flash creation... it is not my favorite thing but as a designer I want to be able to use it if I have to...

so none of that failure talk...

Yep more companies are using it as an addition to their sites. The problem was people before thought Flash was just for ugly looking lame animations.

Hey, I wanna ask one thing.

That yellow human cartoon at the top, at www.aol.com, how's that done?
I mean its an swf file & when you rightclick it & select play, it plays a different animation each time & displays effects on areas where there's no flash.

    So, anyone?

I'm not positive, but logic tells me that he has to be inside a moving CSS layer.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Its a layer & its being moved by Javascript & that shining effect is done by either an image or its the flash file too(just the shining effect).

But one thing is that its transparent & transparency is supported only in IE.
So that AOL Buddy animation is obviously not visible in Netscape & Firebird(I checked with Netscape7 & Firebird0.7).

Isn't the transparency in the flash file, and as thus not reliant on the browser itself for the transparency?

If you mean tranparent movie in Flash, then the answer is NO. Like transparent GIF images, there are no transparent SWF movies. One of the biggest disadvantages. Transparency is supported in IE with the help of wmode parameter, but as mentioned, its IE only.

I believe that Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.4+ support it as well.

well, that's strange. Netscape7.0 is listed there.

I have Netscape7.0 with FlashPlayer7 but still, it doesn't show transparent in my page.
