MySQL password

Being a newbie, I don't know if I did this correct or not. I log into MySQL as root. I typed:

mysql> mysqladmin -u root cobalt-mysql newpassword
->

I get a blank line after that. I tried to log on with the new password and it doesn't work. What did I do wrong?

What are trying to do, just login?

$>mysql -u root -p

then type your password at the prompt if you are trying to password log in as root

mysql>use mysql
mysql>UPDATE user set password = password('yournewpassword') WHERE User = 'root';

I can login fine, and then proced to do that. I get:

Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
Rows matched: 2 Changed: 0 Warnings: 0

So I'm assuming nothing was changed isnce the old password still works.

oh yeah run a $>mysqladmin -u root -p reload

That is at the command prompt not the mysql command prompt and supply the original password for root
