Two Column Layout with Header & Footer

Lets say I have the two column layout with a header and footer. An example would be www.raginguniverse (well they have 3 columns but pretend its 2) the header and footer are attached to the navigation and my problem is if my side column gets taller than the second the footer moves down with it, good. the problem comes when my second columns becomes too large for the first and the footer is shifted down and there is this ugly blank spot between the first column and the footer. I should have a picture below to show ya what i mean.

    Hi,

There are four examples of 2 column layouts here that should fit the bill.
