    Human languages

Besides English, what human languages are you comfortable working in? If you could get your brain programmed a-la Matrix with one new language, what language would you choose? (...and why?)

I speak English, and what I'd like to think of as decent French.

I'm currently learning Scottish Gaelic, also.

I'd like to learn many different ones, actually.

My native language is German and very comfortable in english I am (j/k)
I used to know French. I had two years of french at high school but now I don't remember the easiest words and would be horribly lost in France.
Since, I already started with French I would like to brush up my knowledge and become fluent both in speaking and writing.

Always been thinking of learning Cherokee. I feel everyone should learn the languages of their Ancestors. The only problem is there is no one local to me that speaks Cherokee... There are Navajo, Apache and Souix but no Cherokee that I know of, which is weird since the Cherokee is the largest tribe among all Native Americans today.

My college teaches French, Spanish, German and... Ojibwa.

I took Latin for 3 years, but I never really learned anything. Damn hard language. It would be nice to finally know Latin well.

My native language is French (although my spoken French detoriated considerably since elementary school). I'm now more comfortable communicating in English.

I would like to learn German. A former classmate of mine was a German exchange student and the language fascinated me.

I don't have a real native language but I speak German best, followed by English and then finally French.

I guess Spanish would be good to know.

Forgot to list my own. Here they are from best to worst.

    • Native: American English
    • Conversant: Japanese (often with difficulty, luckily there are lots of Japanese natives on my team).
    • Get the basic gist of: Swedish
    • Get the feeling of: German and Spanish, and a fair amount of vocabulary, but I'm completely incompetent in both. German grammar is particularly evil with three genders, and all that Dativ and Generativ. Totally messes with my brain. It seems like you really have to be native to master all that.
    • Would love to be fluent in: French. (Have almost no knowledge at all.) Well, I wouldn't mind going back and studying Swedish some more. Really fun to speak. (Det är mycket roligt att prata på svenska!) But not particularly practical, eh.

Basically, not fluent or proficient in ANY foreign language, but very familiar with a few.

I would like to learn either Japanese or Korean. I know that the Japanese are very business-oriented people and knowing Japanese would help exponentially, plus it sounds cool. I'd also like to learn Korean just out of sheer interest. I studied Taekwondo for 4 years and got my black belt and I had to learn some Korean as I progressed, and I think it would be cool to learn the language of the people that created the martial arts that I studied

    Hahaha. Secret.

Well, you could figure it out quickly by comparing my Sitepoint profile and my Webproject.jp profile. Hehe.

    Is that helpful?

(though I have no Cherokee in me - at least I don't think I do)

I've been to Cherokee North Carolina a couple of times and have seen their presentation. It's amazing what people have done to those that were different than them. One thing that was interesting in the presentations I went to was that there aren't many left, at least in the East Coast, that still speak the Cherokee tongue. The school on the reservation had to make the language a required element in their curriculum just so the language wouldn't die. They did say it's starting to make a comeback, but it's a long ways off.

I actually have their learning tapes and the books. I just need to find the time to sit and learn them.

Yeah, it has... I live in Southern California and at least street Spanish is necessary here. In fact, all of the Spanish that I know, I learned on the street or from co-workers in various past jobs. Don't know even know how to write it or the grammar behind it but I can carry on a semi-decent conversation in person.

I am going to have to ask around at the next Pow-Wow and see if anyone there can point me in the proper direction.

Also working on learning Irish Gaelic but more for research purposes so leaning towards Old Gaelic and Middle Gaelic more than the modern language. And this goes along with refreshing my skills with Old and Middle English.

Same here, I'm a So. Cal guy too, and its almost becoming part of survival. Employers love to hear that you are bilingual.
I took spanish for 4 years, but I need to practice it more.
