    What is a .htaccess?

    Hi poeple:

    Since long time ago I have the this question in mind, what is a .htaccess, what is good for? Please help me on this.

    .htaccess is a file in a directory, defining who has access to that directory of the webserver. Based on definitions that are defined in ".htaccess", usually combined with ".htpasswd" which holds usernames and passwords (usually encrypyed) or could be stored in a db.

    You can rewrite URLs with mod_rewrite (if it's installed on your server), you can set which pages are viewed when a 404, 403, 500, or other error comes up with the ErrorDocument directive, you can set PHP options (like turning register_globals on or off), and a ton of other things.
