Question Creating a paid membership site

    Hello everybody,

I am trying to create a paid membership site where once users have paid they can gain access to a special section of my site with a unique username and password. In this section there will be special content, downloads and a discussion forum. Now here is my problem, I have looked at ccbill.com, probilling.com and ibill.com but I am not sure which would be the easiest to use and has the best customer support so I thought I'd ask if you guys have any experience with them? Also, I had a look at paypal options such as memberzip.com but I want to stay away from paypal because my customers will have to be papypal users and this is limiting my audience which I feel will decrease sales.

I am trying to keep my initial costs down so paid services are not really an option (unless there is no other choice).

Can anyone help or give me some advice, even a link to a good resource would do. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Have you looked at Invision? They have a subscription manager module for their Invision forum that's not too expensive. Click here to read more.

The first thing you want to figure out - do you want your own merchant account or a third party. The problems with ccbill & ibill, they specialize in adult content.

Now assuming that you might be offering adult content - you are going to have to pay a hefty start-up fee to Mastercard/Visa to maintain records on you. What was happening a little more over a year ago, adult web site owners would be at ccbill, have problems. So their account would be cancelled & they would go to ibill. Back in Nov 2002, Visa/Mastercard came up with this new rule.

If you are not doing adult websites - Paypal also offers something called digital downloads or something similar.

If the special section is already there, they just need to have a switch flipped to allow them access, Paypal's IPN would work for you. That's how we allow access to our private area. And it's free.

I would second the recommendation for Dream Account if you have a bit of money to spend: http://www.dreamcost.com/?page=dreamaccount
