How could I know that my modem is a Winmodem (which is not supported widely for Linux)?
It said in Win98: Rockwell HCF 56k PCI Modem

And I ran the port scanner (vwdial or sthing like that) but it can't find any modem.

    Thanks

HCF means that it is a software modem So it won't work in Linux. Not sure why the port scan didn't pick it up - I presume that it can't even detect software modems.

I have had my share of winmodems. I couldn't find a way around it, or at least not until I got my cable Internet access a few days ago (I can surf the 'net in BeOS).

The only way to get around it is to buy a hardware modem. W. Luke will probably recommend the Zoom modem to you

Yeah, it took me about 2hrs trying to hook up the net with Linux RH, but the DSL also seems to be complicated for a newbie Linux user (recompile Linux kernel)

Btw, is doing that (recompiling kernel) hard??? Since they're "big words"
