    mkaufman,

wow thats an interesting computer you have....hmm...well the most obvious question i would ask is, 1.)is there a pattern to how often it resets itself or does it just happen randomly every time?

    common problems:
    1.)errr you've been infected with a virus/trojan(although i doubt)

2.)some recent program you installed is causing a problem in the registry?

    3.)a rogue script/program

    4.)windows is screwed up lol.......

just answer my question above, and ill try to help ya
oh yeah did you do anything recvent to your pc?lioke blackout, installation of new software, etc....?]thanks

Well, first thing's first: what's it doing, specifically?

I have a computer I use now and t hen which flicks off for no inparticular reason now and then and restarts - no freeze or anything, at least not for more than a second.

My very technically-oriented stepfather tells me it's likely a loose wire somewhere that is bumped now and then, which is why it comes back on, seemingly off for only a second.

Now, if your mouse mysteriously clicks on the Start Menu, and chooses the Shut Down option despite your moving it to the contrary, you're gonna need an old priest, and a young priest.

well if your running windows i've heard that if you move the mouse it tends to crash <jejeje...>

ok, serious. first are you connected to the net when it crashes? i know some people have been messing around with my pc since i havent bothered installinga a firewall!

another option would be that... actually there could be loads of reasons. sometimes the motherboard restarts the pc when it starts getting to hot... check the fan perhaps.

Well, my computer used to do that too. Your problem may be one of the below:

    1. You are running Norton Antivirus 2000
    2. Your battery is running down
    3. Windows
    4. UPS
    5. Power

    My suggestions are:

    1. Install a Norton Patch
    2. Install a Windows Patch
    3. Replace the battery
    4. Format and re-install Windows
    5. Check your UPS and it's connection
    6. Check the power running to your computer and the breaker it's on. Put your computer on it's own.

I've installed a wireless mouse, new keyboard and a new monitor since this started happening.

The screen just goes blank and then restarts

I will probably reinstall windows sometime next week..

I do have a UPS, but it never did that before.

Let me know what you think

I personally don't have any UPS experience, but my uncle uses one and he said that the cause of my problem may be with a UPS(he didn't know I didn't have one). Search around the net for information about UPS problems and see if you find anything useful. Sorry I don't know more about Uninteruptable-Power-Supplies.

I have had this problem before, and I traced it down to a bad UPS. The UPS was a really good one (Industrial one) but it was old. It worked for a year or so, then just started restarting like crazy. It could be the UPS, or a number of other hardware-related things, including:
    • Power Cable
    • Power Supply (in your computer)
    • Wall outlet
    • Loose wire (as pointed out)
    • Bad software

Things to do (besides check the above):
    • Check windowsupdate.com for updates
    • remove the wireless mouse (never know, might be the source)

If none of those work, it could be a problem with your motherboard (really bad).

I had the same problem, and still do sometimes.

My powercord cable from the UPS -> CPU is a little loose, and sometimes it looses contact and switches off and REFUSES to start.

I guess I have to change the cord.

Actually I think it may be my monitor taking up too much electricity and my UPS resets it

It only happened about 3 times.
