    Designing a music lesson site

    Hi,

I want to build a site for a friend who is a professional musician.

    1. He wishes to create online piano lessons

Q What is the best way to create online lessons to get the best quality?

    2. He also wants to provide excerpts of music he has written and produced?

Q What's the best format to use for this?

    Thanks

    1) The site itself could be done in anything but I would do the lessons in Flash. It is probably the best way. You could do both the sound and movie at the same time. You could also have user interaction.

    2) Many people like Quicktime as a streaming audio file. Otherwise you could just have them download an MP3

Since I don't have experience in Flash, MP3 may be the way to go.

How does one create (record) an MP3 file for downloading?

Does he actually have the files on his computer?

I believe that you could probbably just be able to use some sort of gizmo which could connect some studio machine to a laptop computer, or you could haul your computer tower and screen into his studio. If he has no studio and no recording of himself playing, well just tell him to find a way to record them. If he has a studio, he should be able to make CDs of his music, in which case tell him to give you one. There's probbably a decoder on the internet that can translate the files on CDs to MP3s.

As for the music lessons, I'd say that flash would be the only way to go, unless you have a way to make quicktime movies. I'd suggest that you have videos of him. Seeing someone play and telling you to play is WAY easier to learn from than someone just telling you to play something that you didn't see them play.

I use a program from Blaze Audio called RipEditBurn2, not free but it is inexpensive, which will let you save audio files to MP3. It is also helpful because the edit portion let's you add effects such as fade in or out among others which might be useful for what you are trying to do.

You can also stream MP3s by writing a simple .m3u file and it should play in the default media player.

you'll get alot more integration with WMP,HTML and javascript, and if you use divX codecs you can get smaller files than mp3. The best thing to do in my opinion is to get MIDI files for each key of the piano, they are the smallest possible sound files. put these into an array and play them on event, setting up a "simple simon" type program, where you follow the leader, the piano plays a song or part of, with the user following.

With WMP you can change the URL of the sound being used as well, so you can start with compressed sounds (fast download) and offer purer sounds to be downloaded and imported, which can be of any size.

By using WMP9 you also have the ability to change the pitch, balance and volume of the sounds as well.
compare functions in my drum page and this flash page http://listen.to/djembe although their rhythm creation is easier ( next bit to go on mine ) I have alot more functions and download speed is about the same.

I have a free ebook that will show you how to record your MP3 and then convert to streaming audio. If you are able to do this with flash then you won't need my software however if you are a complete novice this will do all the hard work for you.

Just go to http://www.mp3soundstream.com and choose the free ebook section and you can also download free recording software.
