I am contemplating whether or not to have my search results open in a new browser. Currently when someone clicks on a link it opens in the same browser. I am thinking I am losing my visitors with this however, ALL of the search engines have their results formatted like this.

Is there something they know that I don't? Should I have the links open in a new browser? Tell me what you guys like and dislike.

I personally prefer to open the search results in a new window, but I don't really care whether it happens automatically or not, since I can right-click on the link and choose 'Open Link in New Window'.

Other people will prefer to open links in the same browser window, I guess, so maybe you could have a small survey about this. That way you let your visitors decide.

Good idea. But, I would still like to know what others think.

Why not give users the choice.

Have the link title and then have two little texts next to it "open in same", "open in new".

Sometimes i want to open it in new sometimes not, just depends how many windows i have open currently etc.

Or you could have the title link to open in the same window and have a little piece of text next to it saying "open in new" that obviously opens in _blank.

    Or the other way around!
