    IP Addresses

I have a feature that stores the IP Address of a person voting I think there are a couple who are cheating but want to check just to make sure I'm right

When a person votes they have to select a country from the list this is then stored with there IP Address Would I be right that the ISP for say 195.92.*.*(FREESERVE) can belong only to to an ISP in one country or can the ISP have the same code for each country it Covers.

    Hope your not confussed
    many thanks

I've wondered about this too, because dial ups can disconnect and reconnect and get a different IP.

Not sure if this is what you're after, but www.ip-to-country.com has a database of which IP addresses are assigned to what countries. I use it to tell what country my site visitors are coming from.

IPs of a country are different from those of other country be it that the ISP involved in both countries is same or the users are dialing a dial-up-connection. However if the users are dialing a dial-up-connection to a number belonging to another country than their own(very rare) or if the ISP has the server in another country(pretty rare again) then the IP will be that of the country where the sever is located since its the ISP's server that assigns the IP to the user.

The database at www.ip-to-country.com is a free one & you can tell what country are your visitors from. So you can remove the option of letting the users fill in the country since you can determine that from the IP of the visitors. But that's the limit of this database. Only countries.
However, www.ip2location.com provides you a database that contains even the states, cities & the ISP details besides countries. But since its not free & your need doesn't demand it, I'd say that you go with www.ip-to-country.com database.

    AU) AUSTRALIA,
    QUEENSLAND,

Pity, I'm in Adelaide, on the complete other side of the continent.

I didn't say that its dead accurate. C'mon guys, they are not CIA.
Some of their info may be wrong, I don't argue but its still better than the database at www.ip-to-country.com. It consists only of countries in the database.
But then, the fault in your case may be because of your ISP.
Like, I did a lookup on the IP address 216.239.39.99(IP address of www.google.com) & it turned up Mountain View, California & the ISP as Google Inc.
Also in the case of MobileBadBoy, it turned up right.

    Thanks For All the help
    I'll take a look At The ip-to-country.

I am using the countrys at the moment to slow down the voting as my last system when I started it recieved 60,000 votes in the first week (There was just a bit of cheating)

I'm using The IP As it's simpler but has its drew backs but using cokies also have there draw drewback i.e They can be deleted There is one way to stop cheating and thats to make it members only but wont get enough using the charts.

Is there another approch I could take for the chart systems on my site (The Music system being the most complex as can have unlimited number of charts or polls plus members genre charts and a radio station system) Only the default music charts have been built so far there will be over 20 tables required for this system so if I could find a way other than the three methods above to stop cheating it would help no end.

again thanks for the info sorry it took me some time to get back but been working on the site.
