Number 7 with our without dash

    Hello there,

just had a discussion with somebody about whether the British people normal write the 7 with a dash or without (like it is on the computer keyboard). Also it would be interesting to know how different countries handle it.. so you could write down where you from and how this country normally writes it..

    Regards,

    Through it?

Do you mean the number 7 with a dash going through it?

If so... then I do, an American programmer. I also put a slash through my zeros, to which my bank finally figured out on my deposit slips...

Number 7 with a dash is common in conienntal europe, because there a 1 (one) is written with an extended serif, and can be confused wtih the seven without the dash.

I was taught to in computerspeak in the late 1960s when, to save confusion, the following were used:

    7 with a dash - avoid confusion with T
S with a single vertical stroke through it - avoid confusion with 5
I with prominent serifs - avoid confision with 1
Zero with an oblique stroke - avoid confusion with letter O

Of course there were the days of only capital letters and number and very little punctuation. From memory this was a 6 bit codeset (giving 64 possible characters and was probably early EBSIDIC.

And this was the time I learned to punch 80 column cards with a hand punch.

I'm still at school in England and very few people write 7s with a dash through them now.
