Someone told me that PHP can edit images. Is this true? For example, could I generate a gif header image for an article based on its title in the database?

If this can be done with PHP, could you give me a quick rundown of the techniques? I hope there are some tutorials for this too.

If your host has the gd library installed you can create images on the fly , and overlay text etc to make buttons, banners, graphs and stuff, checkout the image functions at http://www.php.net/manual/ref.image.php .

You can mess about with SWF files but I have not played with that yet (I have enough probs with simple flash) .

You can also manipulate apps like Imagemagic or even basic unix functions lide djpeg, cjpeg etc using the exec/system() commands but your host has to really like you !

Your best bet is probably GD , but check with your host if they have it (or use phpinfo()) cos chances are if they do not already have it installed they are unlikely to change.
