HELP Can't install MySql & PHP!

Hi,

I've been reading all there's to read about installing MySql and php on my Raq3. I red the instrctions provided by several members, but I must admint.. I AM CONFUSED!!

The Cobalt KB says something, peple here at SitePointForum are saying something else, members of WebHostingLink are saying something else. I have also red the article about installing MySQL/PHP at http://www.webmasterbase.com/article.php?aid=228&pid=44.

I need someone to give me an easy direction about how to install these softwares.

Please, can anyone help??

C'mon guys! There must be some other easier solution to this! The topic you refere to is the same article which I said was to hard for me to understand!

Here would my simple solution.
either
1. If you have a RAQ3, I cannot see any reason not to "cheat" and install the MySQL pkg from http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com/ (goto install software from the control panel)
2. Follow the instructions I posted before about installing PHP.

I have found out more recently that there are rpms available for PHP, but to be honest (as kyank said) they are more trouble than they are worth.

Thanks I'll try it.. but I have a tiny little problem. I tried to install mysql on my own:

1. uploaded mysql-3.23.28-gamma-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz to /home/sites/home/users/admin
2. logged in as su
3. created directory mkdir /usr/local/mysql
4. punched tar xfz mysql-3.23.28-gamma-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
5. cd mysql-3.23.28-gamma-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
6. % ./configure /usr/local/mysql - NOTHING HAPPEND or SOMETHING HAPPEND - MySQL was installed to: /bin
7. Now when I try make or make install nothing happens - JUST ERROR MESSAGES
8. Whenever I try to connect to mysqladmin, I get:

mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)'

So what should I do now??
Is there any ways to unistall the pakkage?

Perhaps you should have used..
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql
This will install it to /usr/local/mysql
As it says in the webmasterbase tutorial by venerable Kevin Yank, you also need to start the server, and it recommends creating a new group.
If simply starting the server with
bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysqlusr &
(while in the mysql directory) doesnt work, I expect Kevin will give you a pointer in the right direction
If all else fails, you could just delete it and use the afore mentioned pkg.

Since you didn't use the rpm or pkg, I guess the only way is to just manually delete all the files.
Where these reside will depend on your setup, but usually,
/etc/rc.d/init.d will contain a script which makes mysql start with your server. If you delete this and stop mysql, it should be disabled.
Now you just have the fun job of tracking down all the files for mysql and knocking 'em on the head
