I just installed a Yamaha 16x10x40 E-IDE CD Burner to replace my old CD-ROM. I followed the instructions, turned on my computer, everything seems to be working. When I put in a CD to install the Adaptec Software, the CD-RW drives makes a really loud noise. It works; the auto-run screen comes up to allow me to install the softweare, but the drive makes this horrendous noise.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I don't believe that is normal is it? I tried the Yamaha Service website but it is down right now.

    Thanks for any help

I have seen this problem before. Definately not normal. Return the drive and find a replacement ASAP

By the way, does it sound like a saw cutting logs by any chance?

Yes Aidan, it kind of does sound like a saw cutting logs I have it securely in place with 4 screws. Someone else told me to make sure it was in place. So I don't think that is the problem.

Ok, here's the full details of it. I put in an audio/video multimedia cd and it makes a "spinning noise" which I believe is fairly common?!? Then I put in a Jukebox Software CD that came with the burner. Same noise. Finally, I put in the Adaptec Software CD that came with the burner and it sounds like the saw/rocks thing. It is *very* noisy.

Yeah, I would recommend taking it back, too. If you get another one and it still doesn't work, then you know you're doing something wrong.

    Not always the case!

I went through 2 computers (exactly the same kind) which had some problems with it. The third time they finally got it right

I went and exchanged it for another one and it works fine and dandy The second one made a somewhat similar noise as the first one when I put in the game Diablo2, but it was much quiter than the first. And the other CDs I tried only made the normal "spinning noise"

So I guess the other one was just defective or something. Man, that sound it made... you could hear it in another room in my house it was so loud.

Actually, the store I bought it from (which will remain nameless) was giving a special gift card with purchase of the drive. Well, they gave us the amount of the giftcard off the price of the drive because they were out of cards at the register, and then they still gave us the giftcard afterwards ... so I did get a bonus out of it the first time around... and this time they had a special mail in rebate on a pair of speakers which I got today. So all in all I think I got a bargain out of it
