What we really need is to lock up all the Communists. George Bush is a communist you know.

And people need to stop being so paranoid about Aliens. This "Area 51" stuff is driving me insane. AREA 51 IS A DECOY!

After you've exposed the Alien threat and locked up the Commies, I'd bring back beheadings, crucifixations, and 8-tracks.

Seeing that the level of intelligence of the posts in this thread is steadily decreasing, I thought I would give a URL to an interesting article about violence:

Ok, I think I've found a way to get this thread to 1000 posts.

    Lets write a story script.

    OK, I'll start:

Sitting in a dingy hellhole, beeds of sweat dripping from my forehead and not a single bite of food to eat.

Neighbours screaming as usual, the poster of Marilyn Monroe hanging off the wall and in dire need of a serious intake of some strong drugs.

Voices laughing in my head, police raid down the hall....

    Have fun reading
They are trying to explain why some whacked out kids killed their classmates by studying Monkeys and Primates... Does that necessarily transfer to mankind who's reasoning and thought abilities surpass them all? I don't think so. It is that same reasoning and thought combined with a desire to dominate (survival of the fittest, survival instinct) and probably a few misfiring neurons that causes man to kill not for resources or territory but for fun and passion.

While man is not the only animal to kills for territory or resources, it is the most ferocious. Often times man kills for no reason except pleasure, this isn't demonstrated reliably elsewhere. Is this because man is better than the other animals? Or has intelligence gone to far and created an overbalance we can not control?

    You be the judge.

Humans are far from perfect. The same counts for our level of 'intelligence'. Actually saying that all Humans on this planet are on the same level of intelligence is plain wrong.
There are multiple levels of intelligence, or actually 'awareness', but this doesn't seem to be connected to how violent a person is, or can become.

Most things Humans do are based on desires, with only the newer, more 'civilized' parts of our brain to keep us from purely acting on instinct. A good example of this is the murder of a woman by her husband. After examination, it was discovered that when that man was suddenly woken up while he was deep in sleep, the 'higher' parts of his brain wouldn't wake up, but only the 'lower', more primitive parts would, so this man would only act on instinct. That's why he killed his wife: she woke him in the middle of the night when she left the bedroom to go the the bathroom. Since he acted only on instinct, he saw his wife as a treath, and killed her.

The amount in which we Humans are controlled by our instincts differs from person to person, but fact is that only the strenght of our 'intelligence' can keep us from acting like, for example, a dog.

Well I never meant to imply that the level of intelligence was the same among all humans. All people with properly functioning minds though are more intelligent than other animals. This being the case, I don't want to include cases like autism, down syndrome or brain damage, as these are all special cases which would require much more in depth consideration.

However the vast majority of us are at a intelligence level far above a primate. I agree that instinct is a large part of violence in our societies. I kind of touched on that in the previous post (survival of the fittest, etc...) but I would like to talk more to the fact that we as a race use our intelligence to kill.

When someone "snaps" and instinct takes over they can kill efficiently, adrenalin is a massive drug that increases this ability. This comes from the hunter-gatherer days when man was considered food by many creatures on the plains. Even today, Man is not the top predator without his technology, gizmos and gadgets. Muscle to Muscle Man fails against many.

This is where Mankind's difference comes in. Today around the world, people will die because of violence. Less than 1% will be because of instinct. In fact the deaths due to a true "survival of the fittest" battle between two humans, could be counted on one hand over the course of a year. However we continue to make weapons more powerful than the last.

Thousands of years ago we created our first weapons. These were crude but they worked and Man could survive on the plains. While time progressed so did weapons, from sharp sticks to spears to arrows to swords to guns to cannons to bombs to missiles to tactical nuclear warheads. Even today when we could annihilate every living thing on this planet with the touch of a button, people are dreaming up new more powerful weapons.

So why do we kill instead of using reason and logic to settle differences? Why is the first impulse to act one of violence? I think the simplest reason is "Because we can".
