CVS is a Code Versioning System. Similar to SourceSafe from Microsoft except it works on the Web.

What it does is allow multiple developers work on the same program, but only one person can work on a particular file at a time. Some systems also have other features where you can backup source code, revert to old files or add comments to files that others are working on.
