    Testing on different doctypes

    Hi,

I have just removed the doctype from my xhtml:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC '-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN' 'http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd'>

and the layout is partly broken apart. Should I be worried, should the layout be unchanged even without a full doctype?

    thanks,

    DH

If your layout is done with mostly CSS then yes, removing the DOCTYPE will cause problems. Most browsers rely on seeing a DOCTYPE to decide whether to render in "standards mode" or "quirks mode". For more information check out this page.
