Using "col" to reduce load time of tables

I am redesigning the company website and the layout uses a lot of tables on the primary pages (front, product, product detail, etc.). I haven't been able to find a really helpful site that explains how to use the "col" or "cols" tag to improve the load times of the tables.

and yes, I know I could be using CSS and I did buy the Sitepoint book , but time is an issue and I can't spare the time to (re)learn the CSS necessary to do what I want to do.

    Thanks in advance!

<col> is useful for data tables only. It's not really going to speed up the rendering of layout tables if that's what you're going for.
