you can also try installing SWAMP
http://swamp.sourceforge.net/
it worked for me okay. Gets php, mysql, apache up and running quickly, though you'll likely want to upgrade mysql to 4.x later.

or winlamp .... from google.com search winlamp, it installs them all simultaneously with a mysqld of version 4.x
