For me, I don't care about the cool, I want the functional - and Macs will do what i want, office apps, teaching and web pages. Download pix from my digicam on - I take masses - and need to store them somehow - CD-rw should take care of that.

Another reason is if I have a Mac I can test web pages to see that they perform. In the UK the education deal is a 12" Mac with 866MHz G4, 30 Gb hard drive, firewire and USB and DVD/CD-RW for about 750.00 - pretty goo compared with PC type laptops.

    And O.K. - I'll admit - it's pretty cool!!

Everybody has listed out some great-sounding programs. It would be nice if everyone would make links to each programs homepage so I could check them out. Especially the ones I've never heard of. Thanks in advance.

I came accross this WYSIWYG prog. called BlockNote. It can be found at www.blocknote.net It's nothing fancy but HELLa fast. By the way, can someone name some other prog like this one but better? I need to buy a license. Thanks in advance!

I would also strongly advise anyone against Dreamweaver 2004. I am no expert but it LAGS LIKE HELL on my computer when working with big tables. And it also CRASHES. Try opening this file here: http://articles.cpuwars.com/k7s.shtml
editing it and you will understand my pain!

Well, if you don't want to use Dreamweaver, then Microsoft FrontPage is a good option for a WYSIWYG editor. Also Interdev is good if you want to code ASP. & here's a good WYSIWYG editor. Serif WebPlus at http://www.serif.com/webplus/webplus8/index.asp. Not quite in the league of the above mentioned softwares but its a good one. Also, the website has some other good softwares too.

I would say that is less dreamweaver and more your computer.

Did you actually try opening that file on your computer? I've got an Athlon 3200+ with 512 MBs or RAM and a new installation of WinXP SP1.

It takes about 3.5 seconds to copy/paste the big table in dreamweaver. It happens instantly in blocknote. Is my setting wrong in dreamweaver somewhere?

    Thanks, I'll check it out!

    EditPlus - http://www.editplus.com (shareware $30)
Great Text Editor that you can customize to your hearts content

Photoshop 7.01 - There is no substitute

    Namo Webeditor 5.5 - http://www.namo.com
HTML editor which allows you to design in WYSIWYG or text mode and you can switch back and forth. Also has a preview pane, built in ftp client, site map generator, you also have the ability to insert flash. The current version also comes with other programs:
Namo Capture - Screen capture utility (great for documentation)
    Image Slicer
    GIF Animator
    ClipArt Library
Web Canvas - vector graphics editor and drawing tool

SwishMax - http://www.swishmax.com $99 (considerably less than flash)
Awesome tool for creating flash, many complicated features in flashmx are grouped and automated

    Irfanview - http://www.irfanview.com (freeware)
Great all purpose image viewer, I also use it for converting image formats (since I think it does them all and a few others), image cropping

I think I couldn't really manage to well without:

    Adobe Photoshop
    Textpad
    Apache/MySQL/PHP
    Macromedia Fireworks

Cant think of a 5th one, but the following applications come in handy overall for managing a web design business:
    Adobe Acrobat (not reader)
    MS Office
Winzip - backing up whilst I go along to a single file
    Nero - Backups to CD
    All the web browsers.

    I also have:
A massive collection of downloaded scripts from e-commerce to mailing list ones.
A huge list of bookmarks I use for inspiration.
Loads of photos that I download whenever I see them on stock photo sites (thinking ooh this is nice, it'll come in handy one day).

The reason for getting one is the education deal!
I use pagespinner for my Mac and am very happy with it. As I recall it's pretty inexpensive.

Another tool that I came across a while ago is ZipGenius & I've been using it since then instead of WinZip. Its a compression tool like winzip but much better than winzip. The greatest thing about it is that its freeware, supports almost all of the compression formats & the compressed archives that it creates are encrypted.
Its available at http://www.zipgenius.it. Do check it out people.

Also those who use IE but hate it when it slows down when multiple instances of it are open, can check out CrazyBrowser(http://www.crazybrowser.com). Its not a browser but a type of skin for IE. It opens multiple tabs just like Opera. Only one instance of IE is launched which means that it'll not slow down. Also it blocks pop-ups & its a freeware.

Also another browser I love is NeoPlanet(http://www.neoplanet.com). Its a cross between IE & Netscape & thus offers best of both. Its interface is just gorgeous. It can also open multiple tabs within a single window & block pop-ups.
