A plain text ASCII editor is usually a good start, though I won't list five because it depends upon what tasks you are planning to perform.

    For the PC web designer:

    Adobe Photoshop
    Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
    Text Pad (Plain text)
    WinSCP (Secure FTP app)
Search & Replace Utility (My fav is Funduc Software, but they may be out of business)

I know there's a lot of crossover between DW and the last three. A lot of times though you really need a small tool that does just one thing exceptionally well.

Just having the best programs won't make you better. It's knowing how to use these programs that will make you better

dreamweaver is the best for html editing...it also contains an FTP application, so there is no need to buy a FTP program...Photoshop is a must also...after that other programs such as fireworks and flash are great, but the basics are photoshop and dreamweaver.

    Thanks,

Do you think TopStyle is needed anymore, since DW MX 2004 has upgraded its CSS capabilities?

Not sure - I haven't had a chance to use DW 2004 yet. If it's very good, then you can probably get rid of it [ts].

If you do really advanced selector stuff (like html > body, or h2 + p type selectors) then yes, because TopStyle is the only editing program that will let you see what it looks like. DW2004 renders much like IE6, which doesn't understand those complicated selectors.

I've been using Fireworks for about 2 years now... Who need Photoshop anymore???

    Mine would be:
    Dreamweaver
    Fireworks
    Homesite
    Irfanview
phpCollab (does that count? - or another project management application)

But, as Devilware said, just owning the apps doesn't solve anything. Hell, I own a few hammers and a couple of drills and a circular saw... but I can't build a house!

Also, the latest Java version of Arachnaphillia?

    Homesite
    Dreamweaver

    TopStyle

For plain text editing I love the free program Notepad + from Rogsoft. I've been using it for five years now and it's the only thing I use for plain text work. I even have Dreameaver set to use it as my external plain text editor. The only problem with it is that it hasn't been updated in a few years, but that's not a real problem IMHO. Also it fits on a floppy in case anyone still needs that capability.

    All free ones

HTML-Kit - HTML and CSS and php editor (needs free plugins for some of these functions) (includes FTP)
The GIMP - Free Image Editor
Bkreplace - free global search and replace
    phpMyAdmin - for MySQL
    MySQL/php/Apache for testing the websites

    All free ones? - Yeah - I'm a cheapskate.

Make sure you have as many browsers as you can get to see how it look and test usablilty.
And finally, what web developer can live without music, if you dont hav a booming surround sound system in your computer room like I do, Winamp would be my next choice.
