Beginner/ css/layers?

What's up im new here and have been reading here and there trying to find the answers to my question. Please don't flame me too bad.

Here it goes.

My first layout for my webpage was composed of mostly tables to align all of my content, and it looks pretty good in composer( of course) but i have since learned that this is not a good idea. I would like to learn how to use layers and css, are these the same thing?

i am not sure where to start. I have been reading but can't seem to get a good beginners grasp on the subject. I have been using netscape composer, and mozillia composer. I do have dreamweaver, but i don't have XP yet so i can't even install dreamweaver to use it. I'm obviously nowhere near publishing my page and prolly will not be for atleast a good year or two. This is ok, because it is just my hoppy as of now, but i would like to possibley supplement my income later on down the road assuming my website marketing is good.

Can some of you provide me links with tutorials for the beginner on how to use layers and css. i just want to learn the simple most basic stuff for now.

Thanks Joe, Sorry to be a bothersome, but i have another question, When making a CSS is code saved seperately from the HTML? or do you add the CSS in between the head and save the html and css in the same document?

You can include the css in your html document, but the best method is to make a seperate file with a .css extension and link to it.

Don't worry about being flamed - people on this forum are very friendly and helpful.

Once you master the basics from the tutorial that Joe suggested, the best way to improve, in my experience, is to look at how other people have achieved results. A tutorial will give you the basics - to really master the area you need to see it in action.

Also, the CSS forum on this site is a fantastic resource - people give links to some excellent tutorials, like listamatic and the answers to problems that other people have can be very enlightening.

Mike, I came across something else today, based on listamatic - check this one out. Basically, it uses the designs from listamatic, allows you to enter your own links and then generates the CSS and html for you.

Another good tutorial can be found right here on sitepoint. I've found it very helpful in working out some of the bugs and getting the hang of this. You might also want to check out csszengarden.com. Looking at the style sheets there can really be helpful to see how they did it. Hope you find them helpful.
