How to display the 10 latest discussions ?

Anyone knows what I can do to have the links automatically updated for the latest posts in the forums such as on the index page of Sitepoint ?

Any generic ones ?

Its different for each forum (eg vB, UBB etc) - which one do you have?

Well, I have vBulletin and I am extremely interested in accomplishing this automation. I recall reading a previous thread about this, but when I tried that code, it didn't work and I was unsure about specifications like how I can customize the look of the headlines and filter out private ones. Thanks!
