urgent - table width in 2 col layout ie5 vs 6

I've just discovered to my horror that my 2 col layout that works perfectly in IE6 behaves completely differently in IE5 and 5.5.

When setting an embedded data table to 100% in my 'content column', it fills the available space properly in IE6. But in 5.5, it causes a huge horizontal scroll bar (I'm guessing it's adding my 'menu column' width to the 100%). Surely this is a problem that people have encountered and found work arounds for?

I really appreciate advice - or pointer to a topic/article already covering this. The site is government and not yet released so please email me if you want to view the URL.

It's a bit hard to determine what's wrong without seeing the site.

Maybe you are a victim of IE5.X's faulty box model, this might help you: http://tantek.com/CSS/Examples/boxmodelhack.html

Another thing that might happen is a rounding error in the width calculation, try setting it to 99%.
