    css space in paragraph

    I have a re-occurring problem with style sheets. I am really really new at this game, though I have been designing for 10 years.

    The problem is browser based. Everything looks great on a mac, any browser, however ie for windows messes things up (not surprising). The problem is that the paragraph gets a space in the last line.

    The code below includes php stuff, but if I have the same results by just pulling the php tags and replacing them with text...

    Looks like this:
    aaaaaaaaaaaa
    aaaaaaaaaaa
    aaaaaaaaaa
    <---- this is not supposed to be here!
    aaaaaaaaa
    PHP Code:
            <table width="259" border="0" cellspacing="4" cellpadding="2">
              <tr>
                <td width="87" height="72"><img src="images/news_thumb_2.jpg" alt="News Graphic" width="87" height="72"></td>
                <td valign="top"> <B class="newsdate"><? echo formatDate($row1->timestamp); ?></B><br>
                    <span class="newsblurb"><? echo $row1->title?></span>
                    <div align="right"><a href="news_story.php?id=<? echo $row1->id?>"><img src="images/news_read_more.jpg" alt="Read More" width="81" height="19" vspace="5" border="0"></a></div>
                </td>
              </tr>
            </table>

    What makes you think it's CSS? And could you post the your CSS code and possibly a link to the page you're having a problem with?

    I believe it's CSS because when I take the style tags out, it doesn't behave that way. I'm not knocking css, in fact I think this stuff is great. However, I have never run into this problem with normal html.

    Here's a link to the site:

    I don't think it's the styles themselves, it might be the way I declare them... I never know when to use a div, or span tag proppery. However, here are the styles:

    Code:
    .copylink a:link { color: #cccccc; font: 9.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: underlined }

    .copylink a:hover { color: #cccccc; font: 9.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: none }

    .copylink a:active {
    	color: #330099;
    	text-decoration: none;
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 9px;
    	font-weight: none;
    }

    .copylink a:visited { color: #cccccc; font: 9.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: none }

    a:link   { color: #000066; font: 9px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: underline}

    a:visited { color: #000066; font: 9px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif}

    a:active  { color: #000080; font: 9px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: none }

    a:hover   { color: #990000; font: 9px Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: underline}

    body      { color: #000000; font: 9.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: none }

    select    { color:#000000; font: 9.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: none; background: #CCCCCC; border: 1 solid #555555; }

    B.menu_item { color: #003300; font: bold 12pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: none }
    B.photo { color: #CC0000; font: 7.5pt Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: none; text-decoration: none }
    .copy {
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 9px;
    }
    .newsdate {
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 9px;
    	color: #0099cc;
    	font-weight: bold;
    }
    .newsblurb {
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 9px;
    }
    .text {
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 10px;
    }
    .pageheader {
    	font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    	font-size: 14px;
    	color: #000066;
    }

    You have no DTD, so IE6 will render in quirks mode (as will all other browsers), so you can't predict what they will do with your markup.

    Add a DTD then re-evfaluate the issue.
