mysql in the command prompt & services

    Hey,
I just installed the phpdev stuff from firepages.com.au (mysql, php, apache). Now I have played with mysql on OS X, and usually i just type:

    prompt:> mysql -username -p

then i put in my password and the mysql monitor fires up. Now im on XP at work, and if i open up the command prompt and trying typing "mysql", i get:

'mysql' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

So, im assuming its a little differnt on windows or something. I did find the mysql.exe file, and that gets exactly to where i want to go, but i just want to figure out what the deal is. Oh yeah, mysql was definitely up and runnign before i tried to access mysql in the monitor.

Also, I keep hearing this talk about installing stuff as a service or not, What does this mean? Should I do this? How can I tell if it is installed as a service already?

    Thanks,

    Rich
