There should be a stupidity award...

    ...because I'd win it

As my ADSL provider don't provide SMTP access, I have to use a local one (I use software called Postcast Server). Anyway I started it up about 10 minutes ago to send an e-mail - and shortly after I realised my computer had suddenly slowed down to a snail's pace.

So I looked in the main Postcast window...and someone had obviously found it and was using it to send 6000 odd spam messages - all because I'd forgotten to deny external connections!

Luckily only 3 had been sent - before I exited the program

Anyway - next year I suggest a "Stupidest Member" category in the awards - I'd be a nominee for sure!

    More like BMW....

The viagra spammers have reported 50 million sales from spam alone.

Spam works, it's just not ethical.

Yeah - and before anyone says SPAM's ok... (there is always one) let's take note that someone felt a need to HACK another system to do this.

His system wasn't hacked. By default SMTP mail servers, relay mail from one machine to another, it is how the Internet Works.

Since he allowed external connections and didn't require authorization to use his server to send emails, it was just sitting there waiting for someone to use it. Someone did. There was no hacking involved. Every email server in the world has this capability and in simpler times, many were available for the public to use. However since the senders of UCE took advantage of this then things had to be locked down in the last few years to protect people's investments in infrastructure or bandwidth.

To hack or more appropriately crack a computer system implies there was security in place to begin with. In this case it wasn't. It would be no different than walking into your public library and "cracking" the public terminals so you can access the Web from there.

Erm... THat's a SLOW email sending program... Ours here sends 10K/minute. I used to do "spam" and the program I used from home sent 1K/minute.

Guess you're lucky you're on a slow connection

That's what I thought was strange - I'm on 512k broadband - but I think the reason it had only sent a couple was that it had to receive the queue of e-mails first - which I'm guessing takes time

I keep getting lovely returned mail at one of my addresses. Apparently someone's using my address in their spam.

Probably Swen. I was getting about 10MB of attachments and mail-bounce notices because some twit (likely, my grandmother - nice guy aren't I?) got infected with Swen and had my name in the OE address book. Then, I dumped everyone in my address book, forced them to whitelist, and provide everyone with this warning:

The reason why it may have been slow was that Postcast is defaulted to put a break of 3 minutes in between the sending of each message, hence the slow send.

I use Postcast a lot and had this happen to me as well (not as many e-mails) when I first started using it.
