    Unhappy error message running mysql

net start mysql command returns 'The MySql service was started successfully',
but when I try any other command like 'mysql mysql' I get error message
ERROR 2013: Lost connection to MySql server during query

Help. I am following instructions in book "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" but it is just working.

I saw an earlier message where someone was getting an error and suggested changing my.cfn to my.ini and putting in windows dir,
but that did not work either.

Just trying to get beyond page 11!!!

Any constructive suggestions welcome. Running windows 2000
    and IIS.

Looks like I should have put this in the MySql forum; can someone move it?
