    Guiness just hacks me off sometimes. WHo cares about stuff like "the longest web page" as that would be simple to beat. Just get some PHP function to print gibberish to the page and loop it endlessly.

    besides, what's the point of having something like that since it would take you like a week and a half to load it, if your computer could even handle that long of a page.

    Also, how do they know what the actual size of the page is? What if the user upped the font size? That would make the page even longer...

    Up the font size, change the margins (make them narrower). It's all pointless really.

    Edit:

    I can't spell

    And the page of guinessworldrecords is also very slow (not when loading, but after loading, the logo running up & down, and other stuff, my machine lagged!

    What a fake, there is nothing on most of the page. It wouldn't be that difficult to create one longer with judicious use of PHP and a database of lengths/distances.

    All you need to know is how many pixels make up an inch and then you can use PHP to generate the right top value for the tables for each item.

    If I can find a reliable quick source of some lengths/distances I might give it a try when I have a bit of time spare.

    It doesn't crash IE on my PC as the page is practically empty.

    Imagine if it was all text, and you upped the font. it would take a month to process it...

    That is a pretty stupid record though. Plus, I hate the fact i can never find the records i am interested in. i couldn't even find, most pushups in a row, in the book...

    On the guiness page it says this about the guy who broke it:

    "When finding a new record to break, Ralf states that he looks for something that would be interesting and challenging, rather than one that would be easy to break."

    This is probably THE easiest record to break. I think some sitepoint members should team up and break it...or maybe I will

    I am going to break that record now, when I get some time free I will sit down and compile a database of lengths/distances and break the record with it.

    Now that's a good idea. Wayne do you feel like writing a quick script to try it? Open it in Lynx and I'm sure it won't crash.

    Well I made a PHP script to create 1,000,000,000 lines..although knowing me I forgot to restart my computer to clear the RAM and I left it on while I was at school. I came home and it says "out of memory"!

    I'll try again.

    Sure I'll write a script to do it... Not sure if it will take down the server though. Currently we have 27,457,174 characters stored in post text alone. This doesn't count user profiles and everything else.

    OK.. Here is a start... It is only the oldest 1000 posts. Not sure how long it is though. Could make it longer with some formatting and a little pizzazz.. The script is all of 12 lines long.

    Code:
    <?php
    require("global.php");
    $db=mysql_connect($servername,$dbusername,$dbpassword);
    mysql_select_db($dbname);
    $query="select pagetext from post ORDER BY postid LIMIT 1000 ";
    $resultlatest=mysql_query($query,$db);
    echo ("<html><head><title>SitePoint and the Longest Post</title></head><body bg=#ffffff>");
    while ($latest_array = mysql_fetch_array($resultlatest)) {
      echo ("<p FACE=\"Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">".$latest_array[pagetext]."</p>");
    }
    echo ("<p align=center><a href=\"index.php\">Return to the forums</a></p>");
    echo ("</body></html>");
    ?>

    Wayne: that must kill the server! Try removing the "LIMIT 1000" part. (Just kidding)

    Seen as this thread is carrying on I might as well mention now that there will be a SitePoint effort next year on this record and it will involve the community as a whole. Everyone will be able to contribute and everyone that does will get mentioned on the page.

    It will go down as SitePoint.com and members breaking the record.

    I will be co-ordinating the effort on the record so to all interested parties, you have my details.
