Humor Websites Sued for Illegally Using Content

This should be a wakeup call to many humor webmasters out there:

    From: http://www.speeds-cartoons.com/index2.php

Running this website is a hobby to me. It is a lot of fun. It takes a great amount of time and money. I do not run Speeds on a free server as some sites do. I use a web hosting service that requires a monthly fee.

Any hobby is fun until it loses its appeal.
Well, running Speeds may have just lost its appeal to this webmaster!

When I see 5 names sueing a bunch of sites like that, as opposed to a business, I think "Lawyer had lunch with 5 friends, decided on who would make a nice target." Undoubtedly they're hoping for a settlement from all these rich webmasters.

"Oh no sir, please don't take my $3.50 a month from banner ads."

If it was some media company that could have copyrighted jokes I might think differently.

Or these guys are also joke site owners and are trying to lower the competition.

What are the being sued for exactly? I've not seen any post saying what they are being sued for. I doubt it's jokes. Most likely it's from wrongfully using copyrighted cartoons/images.

The folks suing are artists that created those works - which are being used without permission. It's a pretty serious lawsuit.

They are all well-established artists, some have even published books of their works, and all have registered their works with the copyright office.

So why would this bother you?

Or maybe I should ask (and I mean this seriously, not facetiously)... what's the point?

If some sites are taking copyrighted content and offering it for profit without permission then it is pretty hard to drum up sympathy for those sites.

Or is the deal that this suit is frivolous? I assume from what you've said so far that this isn't a group attempting to claim ownership of jokes that are basically of folk origin.

Are there any articles about this suit?

I posted it because I think it's long overdue that humor webmasters that are using unlicensed content be held accountable for their actions. I don't have alot of sympathy for them.

    Ok, that clears it up!

I wonder how the suit will fly against 50megs.com

My searching endeavors have found two references of this suit on the internet, both in that list of sites. Hmmm.

Yeah, it was probably a subsite of 50megs.com that was actually being sued. 50megs has tons of subsites.

I'm curios about the source too. Initially I thought that it was ridiculous that ALL those sites had ripped off one source, now I think it was sort of a case of something getting emailed around and ending up perceived as being of folk origin combined with simple rip offs.

I can see copyrighting a specific artistic work being copyrighted and defended which is (from my understanding) what is going on in this case, but the idea of copyrighting a joke seems kind of ridiculous to me (I hope that isn't what is happening).

No, it's far worse than that.

Dan Reynolds is an accomplished cartoonist - he has found his content stolen hundreds of times and used on sites both large and small.

This isn't a case where these artists are out to make a quick buck, they're trying to deal with those that are using their content illegally.

I know a lot of humor webmasters who use images, flash movies and even entire page designs without permission. I'm sure bstrawse knows a lot of these people too. A lot of newbie humor webmasters don't have a conscience.

    Sued

If anyone else has been sued by this guy please email me at jdt@batcave.net so I know what to expect. I received no cease and decist and I really have no idea what this is for yet - but I suspect either one of my freehost users posted a cartoon or something along those lines.

    Thank you
