Navigation Suggestions

I am looking for a better way to have users navigate my sites content. As it stands now, the navigation takes up a significan portion of my page (the top third or so).
I was thinking DHTML or JavaScript, anyone have a great script or warnings about using either?

Just a warning about using javascript. Some users have it disabled. They will be missing whatever you do with that javacript. I for one, have a very discriminating browser that will not display any javascript that is not VERY well written. It simply ignores it. So I often find myself missing the spiffy effects and get an annoying box telling me what you did wrong. Just something to think about.
