When Is A Visitor A New Visitor Or Unique Visitor?

How is everyone doing? For my stats tracking program I was asked the question "when do you want a visitor to be a new or unique vistor?" Meaning, after 30 min, after 1 hour, or after one day a vistor can be a new or unique vistor. I chose after one day or after 24 hours is up a vistor to my website will be a new visitor or unique visitor.

For some of the website owners in this forum, when do you determine when a vistor will be new or unique? Is it after 30 min, 1 hour, or 1 day?

I hope I am making since. Please forgive me if I am not.

I use phplogger from www.phpee.com which uses a default of 30 minutes - that's fine with me.

I think 24 hours is best.. if someone goes to your site 10 times that day.. 30 minutes apart.. then you think you have 9 extra visits.. that's just my opinion though

It comes down to how you are using the results. And you need to look at the number of visitors with the page views.

I would be happy with 30 mins; if someone comes back after that time then thats great. It means they like my site and want more.

Is your tracking program going to look specifically at how often visitors re-visit? If it does then a longer default (say 24 hours) may give you the best of both worlds
