    i installed MySQL, or so i thought. here is the error i am getting from my DOS prompt. btw, i am using NT Server 4.

    i have done the following in my attempt to start up MySQL server:

    << at DOS prompt >>

    cd cd:\MySQL\bin

    ** displays C:\MYSQL\bin

    mysql

    ** displays error message:
    ---------------
    Error 2003: Can't connect to MySQL Server on 'localhost' (10061)


    ==============

    what am i doing wrong? i am excited to learn how to use databases with PHP, but right now it's a no-go.

    You need to start the mySQL daemon.

    Try:

    mysqld-shareware

    or whatever the daemon is named, to startup the database server. You should find the executable in c:\mySQL\bin. After that you should be able to connect by typing:

    mysql

    thanx for your suggestion....silly me never bothered to look down in the task tray. here i was continuously clicking on the mysql.exe file and nothing happening, yet there WAS something happening. the program was staying minimized. by the time i realized what was going on i had over 10 instances of the program running! so now i have learned how to create tables and data from the command line prompt, and am about to learn how to interact with database via PHP. it is very exciting!
