    How about a chit-chat?

It's probably been suggested before (If it hasn't been you should all be ashamed) but what about the option to chat with our fellow sitepointers in real time?

You can get a chat room hosted for free on quakenet.

It would be difficult as it would have to be supervised 24 hours a day, which may present a few problems (it would mean a staff member sitting there doing nothing for hours except reading ALL the text - fun!)

The forums need this much staff just to keep up with the large membership and activity levels; an "always-on" chat room would be very difficult to moderate.

    Hi,

Yep. Technically. SitePoint is "always on," but it's not a chat room. Anyway, things often get out of hand in those rooms.

    Unless there's some legal implications I don't know about it's a sinch.

The board if full of primarily mature, friendly and helpful people anyway. Picking mods is easy.

There's a lot more to picking moderators than most people think. A regular level of time commitment is needed and it can take a toll on those who are unprepared for it.

I think most of the SP staff basically live in front of their monitors...

Back on topic, the problem with a chat room is it defeats the purpose of the forum. For one thing, the forum is spiderable and quickly becomes a source of content. A chat room, OTOH, does nothing but appease a compulsory need to chit-chat. It has no spiderable traits. Not a bad thing but not what SP is about either.

    Exactly

Sitepoint is a web design/development/promotion etc community. A chat room is not a suitable place for people to ask questions related to website design. Even talking on MSN Messenger to someone, asking questions about this topic is a problem (more than one person talking at a time, getting answers mixed up, etc).

Forums are a much more ideal situation. They are structured, and there are guidelines in place that people can follow. Chat rooms are just an excuse for spamming and annoying others, imo.

    Hi,

Ahh... that makes sense! Content, rather than chit-chat.

I can speak from a little experience here.

This site had a chat room and it didn't go well. When it was used, people wanted to pose as Sitepoint staff and cause problems. Also if something happened and an appointed op, wasn't in the room at all times then people would try to take control of the room. It may seem like there are a lot of mature people here but there are a immature little imps as well.

Scheduled chats that could be logged and controlled would be a good thing in the long term but not a general chit-chat room.

Re: the last option Wayne; that sounds excellent!

Like one of those chat sessions where you can ask questions to a special guest

Ah... that sounds good! I think we'll have to convince Kevin Yank to come in that way...

Schedualed sounds good. Different sessions just to chat, or maybe for a certain topic. Could be fun.

At the moment there are no imminent plans to introduce a chat room to the forums. However, this could be something that we may consider in the future.
