problems starting mysql

I am a newbie, trying to get started with mysql. I downloaded mysql to my win 98 computer. I installed Mysql Ver. 4.0.14. Nowhere am I prompted to setup a password or a user name. Is this a problem? How do I set up a passord.

default is root with no password. Please refer to the MySQL documentation on adding new users.
