Is there a limit to the number of keywords one could safely use in the meta tags? I know on search engines, too many will hurt you.

I like to keep mine to a mx of 10 or so for keywords...

    Heres what I would suggest...

    Use some variation... try 2, 6, 10, 20, etc....

then monitor your results and see what pages perform best...

Monitoring your rankings are the most important procedure in netmarketing

There are no "real" restriction about no. of keywords. However, too many keywords will dilute each keyword's desinty or it means reduce each keyword's relevance. Then, you may suffer in search engine position.

I agree with you guys about not having too many keywords, however I have analyzed the top ten ranins for a few search engines and everyone has at least 15 or more. Some as high as 40.

The is mainly Intomi where I have tried every possible combination of word count, keyword density, title length and keyword count and still rank around 50 - 75.

Does anybody know of any help I can get for Inktomi?

    Thanks

Ditto on keeping the words list short. Too many words "dilute" the ranking. Hard to do with some types of sites (there are so many ways you want to be ranked).

We've found that if you keep your keyword tags reasonably short (10 words or so) it seems to work best. Anymore and they become too diluted to become effective.

Choose keywords that exactly match the words/phrasing in your page body. We've got clients ranking at no1 with only two or three phrases (100% relevant ones) in the keyword tag.

Keeping your keywords relevant to your page text is the key! Most of all, be sensible. Find out what people are searching for and engineer your pages to the search terms most applicable to your site...

Exactly! If it's not on your pages, you will not rank for it.
