Yeah, amazing. They are saying that the Niagra power grid is overloaded... Can't believe that that power grid supplies that many people.

What can't you believe? Power goes out often, not a big deal.

Hmmm, I haven't experienced an outage in years at home and only a couple at work during the last couple of years. I expect this kind of service from Florida Power & Light. They certainly charge me a lot of money for it. I think the last bill was $200 for only 7,000 KW

My bill from Progress Energy (FPL's "competition" in FL) last month was $175, so you're not alone there . However, I've been getting small power outages at my house that last about 5 minutes or less. It's been because of the massive storms lately though.

Just a side note, not all of Boston was hit with power outages. We didn't have any here at the office. But then again, we rent the building from crunchy earthy types, so maybe we have some alternative source (I dread to think what) of back-up
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

You could suffocate to death or die of heat stroke in one of those subway cars... I hope they get it fixed soon. My, how dependent upon electricity we are...

Baltimore. Now power outages here. But it was scary for a few minutes. The FERC has said it has ruled out terrorism.

Maybe I'm not well informed on this issue, but I find it a bit strange that such a large area is dependent on one source of energy without a backup solution.

Especially since there has been speculation in the past about terrorist attacks on power plants, one would expect the government to see that as one extra argument to have backup plans in place for this area.

It's divided into far more than 3 sections. The power grid that failed is the Niagara Mohawk Power grid which covers all of New York State and actually, that is it's primary area. The other cities affected are just outlying areas of New York State.

Obviously we don't know what happened. There are safeguards in place but since we don't know yet what happened, it's difficult to know why the safeguards did not work. The last time something like this happened was Summer of 1965, so it's been almost 40 years...

    Errmmmm... hardly:
    2002
    1996
    1989
    1977
    1965

And, I doubt anyone is going to die in the subway. They do have evac plans, you know. They're well underway.

A week ago, power went out for over four hours here in the Texas summer heat just as night was falling - windstorm + trees = power out. I cooked by candlelight (barely) but there was no computer . no bath because the pump was out, no reading that Linux book sitting on the shelf, no nothing. Ended up getting an early evening nap. This was a reality check on electricity dependence and put me in touch with nature's rhythms once again so it wasn't all a bad thing. When the power supply really starts going south in the near future, it will be quite an adventure for us all.

They are saying an overloading on the grid caused this... But that could mean two things.

    1) Demand for power is higher than supply (seems likely) which would be something similar to what we saw in California.
    2) Or they put too much power through the lines and blew the grid.

And Aaron, I agree with all of the divisions of the grid but since one section of the grid usually depends on another, this thing is like dominos.
