Setting up PHP on MAC OSX using kevin yanks book

So i am setting up PHP off of kevin yanks book on an MAC OS 10.6 jaguar, i have a Couple questions:

    1) i was instructed to download a file (libphp4.so.tar.gz) from a place he mentioned. Then rename it to libphp4.so.tar.gz(if it wasnt already named that). I went to the site where he said to DL it from bu they gave me dmg file that has a pkg installer. He then says to move that file you just DL(after extracting) into the apache configuration directory throught the terminal. Well since i didnt have the .so file to move i just installed the pkg and moved on. The next instructions were to run the apache configuration program to install or upgrade the new module with these commands:
    cd /exec/httpd
    sudo apxs -e -a -n php4 libexec/httpd/libphp4.so

Then i had to add a line telling apache which file extensions to treat as PHP scripts to the http.conf:

    echo 'echo "Addtype application/x-httpd-php .php .php3" /etc/httpd/httpd.conf'
    >> |sudo sh -s'

    I did all that.

Then kevin said to restart apache by typing this:
    sudo apachect1 graceful

    That didnt work....(restarting apache)...

My php files dont seem to work, im wondering if its the way i installed it(with that pkg file instead of the .so file). Im wondering if it matters where the PHP file was installed to, its in system/library/

if you need more specifics please ask

I haven't done this, but they seem to know what they're doing.
There are 10 kinds of people in this world,
those who can read binary and those who can't.
