can't connect to mysql

I downloaded and installed mysql yesterday - and at one point was connect successfully. today i can no longer connect.

I am running OS 10.2. When I go to the Terminal, and try to connect to mysql - it immediately says 'mysql ended'. So i went to my error logs and saw this message:

2003-08-02 13:50:48 EDT - Can't unregister node ~BSD Configuration Files~Local since not registered
2003-08-02 13:50:48 EDT - Reference 0 error = -14071

I also tried to run: script/mysql_install_db
and got this error:

./bin/mysqld: Can't change dir to '/usr/local/mysql/./data/' (Errcode: 13)
030802 15:36:49 Aborting
