How do they have a number one ranking?

OK, I'm trying to get a great ranking in Google for "professional web design". I decided to see who has the number one ranking to see if there's anything they did that I can emulate.

But here's the thing: the page with the top ranking in Google for "professional web design" doesn't even have the word "professional" OR the word "design" anywhere on the page (including anywhere hidden)! The page I'm referring to is the home page of pagetutor.com.

And I did a spot check of a bunch of the sites that link to this page. They don't use the words "professional web design" in their <a href> link to this page.

So does anyone know how they could possibly have the number one ranking for this keyphrase? I mean, according to what I know, they shouldn't have ANY ranking for this keyphrase. Am I right?

Cheers!
- Julian

Like I said, I checked the incoming links, and they don't mention "professional web design" in their <a href>. And it's not like this site has a lot of incoming links.

It has to be. Maybe the pages linking to them are about web design.

Also, what makes you so sure that they don't have a lot of incoming links? I would actually guess the opposite and say the do have a lot...

i'd have to agree with crunch. on such a competitive term as "professional web design", it's really surprising that the page showing up first does not even contain those words.
The weird thing is that their tutorials are targeted at beginners and not professionnals, which makes it somehow unlikely that they would be linked with the word "professional". However the number of backlinks is actually high (35000 on alltheweb).
Only thign i can see is high relevancy of linking sites...

maybe they have a lot of these links like on this page:
http://www.kritz.com/
It's an image but with "professional web design" as the alt tag. if there's tons of them, and not that many other sites have this as exact anchor text in their inbound links, it might be it.

It's because of the title and the nearby text of the #3 page for that phrase, which links to the #1 site. That's what's doing it.

The third Google results listing is pagetutor's old location and permanent redirect. The "new" pagetutor index has a PR of 7. Total inbound links from the top 7 se's is: 62,630. AlltheWeb contributes 44,934; Google just 46. Alt img text and/or link text consisting of "professonal web design" posted on thousands of other pages gives them a HUGE link popularity.
This more than offsets the apparent lack of these keywords on the pagetutor's home page.
You could tune a "professional web design" page for that exact phrase...but without an equal LinkPop....it'll be extremely tough.
Just checked Google for "professional web design services" and wouldn't you know...www.crunch42.com is number 18 out of 2.5m results. Not bad. You could benefit from an optimized home page: meta tags, comments, alt img text, heading tag, etc., adjusting your keyword density to hone in on your desired phrase. Use all options. Make it just the way Google likes to see it and I'm sure you'll move upward from #93. Onward! --Greg

It's always weird.

But something to bear in mind is that only those pages with a PR4 or above apparently show in link:URL searches these days. So it sounds like the site in question has a monster number of links if 64k are already showing up.

Did you check the cache's of the pages? They might be cloaking.

phpbb has a high PR because it has a over 100,000 pages on site backlinking to the domain (yes, they're the forum links acting as backlinks) - plus there's a further 1.5 million or so indexed phpbb board pages, all with the phpbb domain link at the bottom of the indexed pages. So no wonder they rate highly.

And as to no.1 rating - it's amazing how much weight actual backlinks have in terms of using the key words in the link for SERPs. Create a few links to your own domain on your pages using the key words "tampon elephant" - and then after the backlinks are updates, see if you're not rated for that search term, even though you probably don't have the terms "tampon" or "elephant" anywhere on your site.

I had optimized my page a lot and gotten to about number 15 for "professional web design" just a few days before the Florida update. Now I'm not in the top 200 for that phrase. *sigh*
