best, most cost effective 3d program...

I want to get into hardcore 3d design, gaming and general pictures, landscapes, abstract that sort of thing,

Currently I have photoshop 7 and some freeware 3d programs to help me on my quest but... I need something that can handle the deeper stuff than just simple mesh editing (like Wings 3d)

I have worked with povray in the past (and still do) but the learning curve is huge, I have worked with it for 2 or so years and the guys in some of the fourms are doing things I have never heard of...

Sometimes I feel like i'm working with crayons when there are real programs out there. I'm not saying that povray is not real i'm saying that I want to get into something like 3ds max or light wave.

So I submit this question to you...

What program should I use and get involved in...
Also I'm on a budget, I cant afford maya 8 thousand dollars (I know about the PLE)

    Maya
    3ds Max
    Lightwave
Renderman (I would love to have a copy of this... hey its only money... )
    What...?

And my pref would be Cinema4D. Not only is it very easy to learn/understand... it comes in 3 flavours -- depending on your budget and what you want to do in 3D. It also has a 3D paint engine built-in (allowing you to paint textures in 3D).

Maya is great, but very expensive with a steep learning curve. Especially to the uninitiated. 3DMax is great, tons of plugins made for it. Not sure how extensive it's animation abilities are. It's also quite expensive.

    Don't get me wrong though...
C4D XL is the topdog in Maxon's product line. It's not cheap either, but has all the bells-n-whistles, including an excellent animation studio. Animation is extremely simple in this app. But as i mentioned... at least it comes in 3 flavours. And each is ungradable; once you're ready.

    My 2¢.

If you want something that's reasonably priced - I'd highly recommend TrueSpace (not sure what version they're on now) from Caligari.

I started using them back when they were still in version 1, and they've only gotten stronger. Its a modeling and rendering engine in one, and includes animation features and some pretty advanced tools.

I don't know how much their current version runs - but I know they frequently have sales and you can sometimes pick up a recent past version for a pretty reasonable price.

Dude, you can buy Max 5 for $500 on Ebay. It's rare but it's worth it.

Last time I checked with Discreet you could not transfer a 3D studio Max license. So unless they changed this anything sold on Ebay would be an illegal. Thus not able to be upgraded, supported, etc. Not to mention you wouldn't own it.

do pretty much all of these programs have plugins that allow you to export to flash easily?

I would think that because flash is vector based and 3d rendering is very bitmap based, direct conversion from 3d -> flash would be pretty rare if not entirely inpractical.
