@sg707 ; you're right up to a point. You can base your application on a theme or a generic design done by someone else and be happy about it, forgetting to contract someone specifically to design for you because it will only need "small" changes here and there.

But those were designed by someone, and themes (it doesn't matter if it is for Bootstrap, Joomla or Wordpress, etc) are also designed by someone.

Good designers are still needed, and a good designer sitll worths its weight in gold (like any truly good and outstanding specialist in its field). But a good design will not only create something catching and beautiful to see for the eye. He will understand the public it is directed to, and how to attract that public... and in the world of Web Design, that also means how to enhance themes and layouts to make them not only beautiful but practical and easy to use. A lot of UX right there.

Of course, he may suggest the best behaviour for a button or a select field but he will need a programmer or coder to make it work as expected and desired. But he's the one that says "this should do this and that, and work with this animation or, when JS is disabled, should do this"

Maybe if you take some screenshots, blacken out any personal details such as url, etc, and put the images up on a photo sharing website like photobucket or flickr?

I will be 52 years old this year and was laid off last year. It has been 9 months for me. I was the jack of all web in my previous job (over 10 years) and was laid off due to an acquisition by a large company. I've had a couple of interviews bu nothing has worked out for me either. And YES, both companies have a young team, I'm guessing no one's older than 30 years! I am getting a bit hesitant to send my CV lately due to this experience. I have profiles in multiple job boards. I share your sentiments.

I can only go by what you've posted in this thread, but your resume sounds outdated by about 10yrs or more. You should be up to speed on new technologies and after 5yrs of unemployment you should even have a nice portfolio to present that showcases awesome new things like Angular.js and heavy Bootstrap customization, something to show you haven't just completely stagnated. The most recent sounding thing you have is flash and it's a fairly recent casualty in WebDev, but it's still officially a causality. The only real current legitimate use it has is in live streaming video, but as soon as good tech comes out to replace it, that too will be gone.

People aren't going to hand you a job. Forget about age discrimination, your skills are outdated. Age has really nothing to do with it. The reality of it is, nobody wants a new-hire with an outdated skillset. Knowing these things and being able to work with legacy applications is a big plus, but not if that's all you know.
