Communicate with purpose in graphic design

I feel that graphics should be designed keeping in mind your audience. That's because mere 'catchy' themes do not serve the purpose. Therefore communication with purpose is highly essential in graphic design. What do you think in this regard?

Absolutely. Knowledge of the audience demographic, and product marketplace that a design is aimed towards is essential before setting out on a design - it gives you direction and purpose.

It also leads to being able to justify design decisions in plain language and in a rational manner, to a client executive audience that are often sceptical about the value of intangibles such as creativity.

It's easier to win over clients to good design and avoid the common result of them watering it down or heading down the wrong path, when you have strong points of reference rather than rely on only whimsical and vague justifications.

Graphic design communication is done through images, logos and symbols. People understand images and logos more quickly as compared to text and verbal messages. Logo types are corporate identifications based on a special typographical word treatment.
