    Photoshop LE?

I was wondering, is Photoshop LE the same thing as just plain Photoshop?

EDIT: Also, what version of Photoshop would you recommend? I'm looking at buying a copy.

Not really, Photoshop LE is pretty stripped down. They have a 'Photoshop Essentials 2.0' or similar name, which is supposed to be excellent, for around $100 though.

Version 7 is I guess a more complete version... I would look into buying it if you want to seriously get into graphic design for websites or even photos.

Photoshop LE is supposedly crap and, I think, not available anymore. Photoshop Elements is the replacement and is excellent. It's pretty much Photoshop 7, but is based more on web-work, so does not include features specifically for print-work. So, which version you choose should depend on the type of work that you will do, but I highly recommend Photoshop Elements

Elements is indeed good. It's MUCH cheaper, and contains basically everything except for print design stuff.

Be careful, that's a very good way to get an illegal version sold as the real thing

Ok I found PS7 on Ebay. Here's their description:

-CD ONLY (no box or manual included)
    -Full Version*
This is the Full Version, not the Academic Version or Trial. Purchased from the PC World Expo 2002. Label has been added to enhance look of product. CD is original from the Expo. WINDOWS VERSION. Brand new.

(*Full Version, Not Academic. CD from PC World Expo 2002)
Would this be considered a legal copy? I don't want to buy anything illegal and I also don't feel it neccesary to have a manual etc.

I agree with Mattias here. As long as you don't have too many layers in the same PSD file (Elements seems to choke at any file with over 50 layers if I remember correctly) or want to do any hardcore print work, you'll be fine, and Elements is a good and cheap way to "try before you buy" so to speak. If you like Elements, eventually you'll come across a limitation that will force you to buy the full version of Photoshop, but it's definitely worth it .

You could download the trial for PS 7 and see if the extra features it offers over Elements are worth the extra money to you. Also Adobe does offer a upgrade path from Elements to the full version of Photoshop for a reduced price. And if you are a student you can check out some of the educational resellers.

I think going through eBay is an okay option. Simply look for a reputable seller. If you have any questions, ASK THEM! =)

If you do end up getting something else that you ordered (maybe a burned CD copy), you can simply report it to eBay and you will likely get your payments back and they'll be getting in trouble for numerous things. (Doesn't eBay now have like a Buyer Protection Policy, like PayPal's seller one?)

I use Photoshop daily, and think that it is a great program. It is very powerful, and there is tons to learn with it.

I have also gotten to play with Elements. I was very impressed for the price of the application. It tones down some of the "power", but for the money, it is a very useful program.

I also think that you can upgrade to the full version of Photoshop from LE for a discount(if I am not mistaked).

To be totaly honest i will probably get flamed but im 15 and use photoshop and all the macromedia products, if i didnt download them for free how could i afford to pay for them at 15? i know its not legal but if i DIDNT download them i would not be doing anything constructive with my time on the comouter, i wouldnt be on this forum now. I would probably be playing Counter Strike for hours on end like most people my age. Maybe when i get a proper job ill buy original software but for now il break the law and download it for free. If software companys made it cheaper for younger people like me like maybe about 50-80 then i would maybe buy it as it is somthing which after saving a little could afford but its ridiculas at 15 trying to save to buy an original copy of photoshop and $600+ or what ever it is. I may of offended some people but think of it from my point of view !

If you want to be honest, all I can suggest is:
    a) remove the software from your computer
    b) go out and purchase licenses for the software. You can get academic versions or good deals on eBay.

I can't afford a car..I'm just gonna go take one. Ok maybe that's a litte exaguration but the same concept applies..kinda. Not being able to afford something doesn't give you that great of an excuse.

Here's what I did, I got a 200 dollar loan from my parents and bought a sealed, unregistered version of Fireworks 3 and Dreamweaver 3 off of Ebay. I know Fireworks isn't that great of a design tool but you can still draw in some money. You should be able to make enough pretty fast to buy Photoshop.

Not many people start out at the top. There are many other ways of making money, find one that works for you...

Academic versions are for Academic purposes. They are meant for learning and even if you have a real licensed academic version, the moment you use it for non-academic purposes you are outside the scope of the license. That means those selling academic versions on ebay are doing so illegally and those using it to make money are using it illegally.

Sketch: Oh I was not aware of that... don't quite follow that though... I am sure that some academic licenses for some companies ARE transferable?
