I have been in Graphics design industry for many years and I believe graphics can be differenciate by its nature. when we say graphics we deal with the whole development, structures and planning of the layout output while illustration you simply illustrate some drawings or actions posted on books and other materials.

Illustration is drawing, whether by hand or on computer but graphic design is any sort of visual layout art, advertising, etc

That is true graphic designing is all done with computer or we can say in a virtual world while illustration can be defined as sort of technical drawing in which we can draw through our hand or on any computer.
