    Bimbo Ads

I find the Fredericks of Hollywood ads that keep coming up at the bottom of SitePoint pages to be obnoxious and sexist!!

    Attachment 63550

Is SitePoint that hard-up - no pun intended - monetize this website?!

    Sincerely,

    Debbie

I have not noticed any Bimbo Ads and the only ads I tend to get are web and programing related.

I am under the impression that Google Ads are quite clever and personalised to your previous browsing history.

Have you tried any browser Adblocker extensions?

You can just hide all ads if they really bother you.

Are you suggesting that Debbie's browsing history may be influencing the adverts that are displayed via Google Ads and that Debbie may infact be responsible for the showing of the more saucy style of advert...... hmmmmm

or is it possibly because your username is......DOUBLE D that you get adverts pertaining to DOUBLE D objects......

I keep getting ads for node.js and Korean adult online games.
Someone else must have been using my PC.
    I know nothing about node.js

But I never "Google" anything related to "sex" or "hot babes" or "lingerie" or the like...

Nope! I gave up my nagging porn habits YEARS ago!!!

Seriously, though, I live a rather "clean" life online. I don't do Social Media or go to low-class sites like Fox or TMZ or ET or whatever might trigger such ads.

(My life online is pretty much between IT sites and educated sites like the New York Times and Washington Post.)

I don't much like the ads either tbh. We're trialling AdChoices at the moment so I'll pass the feedback on.

Being serious, I do get adverts for some fairly dubious products via SitePoint (e.g. Korean Adult online games).
Like Debbie, I am also very conscious of what I look at on my PC, so I can see no logical reason for this - but what do I know?
Nonetheless, I could see how this might damage SitePoint's reputation.

Yep, I have had that issue too...

I started getting these somewhat slutty ads for Asian girls or whatever back this Summer.

Don't remember the specifics, because at the time it seemed like an anomaly, but now it seems there is a pattern...

And, again, I cannot stress enough that I have very clean surfing habits online...

    Sincerely,

    Debbie

I have also had a couple of dubious 'dating' ads. I've alerted our GM to this thread so that he can take your opinions into account. He's already heard mine.

BTW, another thing I've noticed in the last couple of months is all of this code intertwined with the "Bimbo Ads"...

I do think it has to be somewhat related to browsing history. Mine shows software for editing photographs, which makes sense.

Fredericks of Hollywood sells lingerie, right? Maybe it wasn't necessarily underwear y'all were browsing but maybe just clothes? And in Yahoo!'s infinite wisdom, it jumbled all of those as 'related topics'? (AdChoices is Yahoo!, right?)

I don't know what to tell the rest of y'all regarding the Korean adult dating websites though.

I think it is an over reaction and I agree with Shaun(OfTheDead); it is lingerie ( I will possibly see the ads now as I was not thinking and used Google to spell check Lingerie ! ) and not a porn link.

If you do not want it to happen again I recommend clearing your cache and disabeling ads - Avast the antivirus program does this in Firefox now.

With addchoice you can specify what ads you do not want to display on the site but I would think the only way to disable this one would be to disable all clothes ads.

If you are using chrome or firefox then I would suggest you look at AdBlock extension. Useful for other sites too.

The ads annoy me simply because they aren't tech-related, but the ones that really annoy me are the hover ads which cause a pop-up when I scroll the page using the mouse wheel to get to the quick reply box and the pointer happens to end up over one of those ads - has happened to me at least ten times the past two days.

The flashing animations are the ones that frustrate me the most.
Anyway, I've raised this again with HQ.

Strange, but maybe not so strange: I've never seen these lady ad's, not on the SPF and not elsewhere; but I'm living in Europe and I guess that the Fredericks have only paid for ad's in the US, where they reside *) (showing only to US localized IP-numbers).
Second guess: they have an ad-campaign just for the Christmas-gifts period, and the ad's will not be seen (as often) after 1-1-2014.

That's the reason I have an ad-blocker (for all sites, not just SitePoint). They don't just annoy me; flashing images make it impossible for me to use a page.
