Password activation problems in mysql

I am having difficulty configuring the root password using mysqladmin, under win 2K. I set up the password for root using [mysqladmin -u root password "842560"] and it seems to have no effect. I try to log in under the root username which I set the password for and it rejects me. I can also still log into the mysql monitor without it prompting me for any identification. Is anyone experiencing similar issues? If anyone remotely has any clue on what to do here can you please give me some suggestions as to where the problem may lie... Thanks.

Beware not all in this thread is accurate. This thread works for 4.0x and above, NOT 3.2x.xx.xx.xx versions.
There are some other inaccuracies in the MySQL documentation as well.
