1) If I were to have 1000 members on a daily basis, can someone give me an estimate of how much space and bandwidth it will take on a month?
2) How exactly should I prepare myself as an admin for such environment (3000 members)??

Let's say a page of your forum is 50KB including images and HTML. Each of your 1000 daily members views an average of 5 pages in the forum per day. With a 30 day month, that would be 7.5 gigs a month of traffic. If I made a math mistake I apoligize, I need a calculator
But 7.5 gigs isn't that much. My host (see site in sig :P) gives 20gb normally and 50gb during their sale for 9.95/mo which would cover that and it will probably be a while before you're getting 5000 pageviews a day anyways.

It would be likely you would have significant time to prepare for such an eventuality. But general preparations would immediately include having a team behind you to admin such activity. Usually a forum admin would have plenty enough time during the growth of a forum to gauge which are the most reliable people over time to consider as possible team candidates.Originally Posted by CPInteract

as I mentioned on vbulletin.org - you'll need several servers to share the loadIt would want to be worth it to setup that kind of thing.
How would you be able to get so many members so quick?
h
You would if it's vBulletinOriginally Posted by platinum

WHT is pretty plain - and they only(!) have 600-1000 people online at anyone time. They're running 2 quad xeons (one fot the db alone) and still it can get pretty slow when theres 1000 or so people online![]()
vBulletin (talking 2* here, not investigated 3* that much) is not an efficient program though. One query for every avatar, that's not good

The SomethingAwful forums had 2103 members online at most, and had serious problems with vBulletin. They are now running their own hacked-down version of it, which I assume involved buttloads of caching.

It'll be awhile before your site is as popular as SA... unless you're giving away cash or something.
Well, you can reduce the number of queries. Some admins have gotten it down to under 7 for most of the pages.

1. 1000 members online ? u will need around 1.5-2 GB bandwidth / dayOriginally Posted by CPInteract
or 45-60 GB / month
2. choose some good member to help you as moderators or super moderators
Not at all. As I said earlier, SomethingAwfuls forums had 2000+ members online at one time, and it's certainly not the largest forum on the web.Originally Posted by Bilal

With that said, vBulletin CANNOT handle such loads without serious modification.

Might I suggest Phorum? Its a feature packed forum software package thats extremely quick. (http://www.phorum.org)
I think craigslist would be near the top. This is from a posted faq on the site.
Q: How much traffic does craigslist get?
A: Currently, about 300 million page views per month
Q: How many people use craiglist?
A: Currently over 2 million each month

Heh, that's a very simple HTML layout, there. And a very simple forum software. Guess a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. But 300 million? Yowza - and I didn't even know about this site! SomethingAwful only has a measly 21 million pageviews per month.Originally Posted by edshuck

I'd like to know how craigslist get such traffic volumes with such a painful site/forum layout. :S
It's just my opinion, though. :P
