    mysql can't change password

    hi all

    i've downloaded mysql 4.013 and installed it
    when i go to the command prompt and start it up
    i can read info and stuff with no password
    but when i try to change the password, i don't think it does anything
    i did it the same way that it says in kevin yank's book

    when i try telnet it says this
    telnet localhost 3306 --> connecting to localhost... could not open connection to the host, on port 3306.
    i get an error with 10061 as well somewhere

    mysql 4.013 on winxp pro, iis 5.1,

    thanks

    If you did not set a password for root when you installed MySQL you should do so.

    The way I just did it is this:

    start menu->run->"cmd"
    I entered this into the DOS window:
    net stop mysql
    net start mysql -Sg
    mysql -h localhost mysql
    set password for root@localhost = password("new_pass");
    quit;
    net stop mysql
    net start mysql
